Bitesize Birth - Understanding Birth Rights

September 25th 7.00pm GMT on zoom

Reader I hope that you have had a lovely summer, despite the weather being somewhat variable!

I don't like to send out too many emails as our inboxes are busy. So that is why you haven't heard from me in a while. I have been working on some resources since I last connected with you. On Wednesday 25th at 7.00pm GMT there will be a new Bitesize Birth Lecture - Understanding Birthrights.

If you would like to understand a bit about why coercion happens and why it is so important that it doesn't. you can read an article I wrote for the AIMS journal Birth Space – Supportive or Coercive? here.

The more people I support who are navigating the NHS system, the more it is cemented in me that understanding our rights is so important. This interactive lecture will give an understanding of the rights in the UK, what this means, what it should look like and what you can do if the care and support being offered does not look like that.

If you have a good understanding of what is and isn't ok and how to navigate the system, it can be so useful when engaging with NHS services as a parent or as a care provider. This is unfortunately really essential knowledge if you are accessing care or supporting someone to do so. You would think that healthcare providers have a good understanding of the law and their own codes of conduct but every time I step into a hospital, it seems that I see gross misinterpretation of the law, guidelines and honestly, frank breeches of the codes of conduct. It isn't ok and we need to educate ourselves so that we really understand what we can say no to and how to make a change.

The ticket cost includes a 37 page pdf booklet packed with information about birthrights, useful links to further resources and a link to the recording if you cannot make the session live or would like to watch it again.

We will cover:

Why understanding rights is important

What rights we actually have e.g. recording appointments, getting copies of notes, having the birth you want, where you want, etc

What your choices are and how they are supported by law and the codes of conduct of professionals

What is consent? What should it look like? What to do if it doesn't look how it should.

Understanding why coercion happens, how to avoid it and how to deal with it if it does.

Sharing of knowledge, wisdom and support
