Welcoming a wet Autumn

October 2024

Reader A wet welcome to Autumn! Course updates and a little technique info for you to enjoy snuggled up somewhere warm and dry hopefully.

I hope you have been having a good 2024 so far. The summer was a little disappointing in the UK, though I hope you manged to enjoy the sunny bits where you could. I enjoyed a few gin and tonics on the roof of our narrow boat home when I wasn't on call and it was absolutely gorgeous in the sunshine.

The day after this we had torrential downpours!

Upcoming In Person Course Dates

I have a few in person courses coming up, including one this Saturday in Bedfordshire, which I am really looking forward to. I always love in person teaching days. We all learn so much from each other with the sharing of knowledge, and of course the delicious food that we share together is awesome.

The cost is £165 per person and includes 7 hours of online learning before we meet, 7 hours in person on the day, access to a special student area of my website and a follow up Whatsapp support group. I provide soup, bread, teas and something sweet and everyone brings a little something to add to the sharing of food, knowledge and stories over lunch time.

Upcoming course dates are here, just in case you would like to join in the learning and fun:

Saturday 5th October Bedfordshire MK43 0EY

Monday 11th November, Reigate, Surrey RH1 6AG

Date to be confirmed, Tuesday 29th Oct or 17th Dec, Warwickshire, CV33 9QB

Friday 24th January 2025, Sutton In Craven BD20 7QL

Or if you would like to get together a lovely bunch of birth workers and have a space for me to come to teach you, then get in touch and we can book in a date.

I have availability for one to one sessions via zoom for learning, reflection, debriefs, antenatal education, etc. I charge £40 per hour for these and it is best to get in touch via email and let me know your availability and I can book time for you. shellie@theserenitydoula.co.uk

Helpful Technique

I will just leave you with a helpful technique for giving babies space in the pelvis to move and turn. It is often referred to as a breech tilt because it can be used as part of a series of moves to help make space for a breech baby to turn if that feels right for them. However it is also useful when head down babies are trying to find their way into the top part of the pelvis in the right position for them or if we need to help a baby back up to make space and readjust. It can sometimes feel more accessible for people than a forward leaning inversion and often can be more effective and I'll let you know why below!

It is effective for a number of reasons. Can you guess what they are?...

...Well, firstly we are using gravity in the opposite direction to the birth canal, to make space for the baby to come out from deep in the pelvis into the top part of the pelvis where there is more space for rotation, turning, twisting, etc, without the pointy ischial spines in the way.

Secondly, as you can see here, my hips are in what is called an extended position. They are away from the body and this helps to tilt the pelvis in such a way as to open the front to back space in the top of the pelvis, again making more room for the baby to wriggle and change position.

With the arms above the head, this helps to increase this space further by lifting the rib cage and making more room available in the abdominal cavity, as well as lifting the sacrum out of the way a bit by using the posterior chain of fascia and musculature. Try it yourself by lifting you arms above your head and being aware of your sacrum to feel that slight shift.

That is enough from me for now. I hope you have a wonderful Autumn. Hope to see some of you at one of my in person or online events very soon.

Wishing you Serenity in your work and life,

Shellie
